Mackenzie Prototype 1

Introduction

This is my prototype reel that took a couple of years to complete from conception through to manufacturing. This was a joint effort between me and Charlie Norris (Hardy employee) who did design work based on my ideas. After thoroughly having the reel tested by my good friend Paul Machugh on the river Lochy the reel needed a few minor modifications to get it working perfectly.

The reel comes with a genuine Hardy block leather case which is appropriate given the project was a joint effort between Charlie and me. The engraved “MN1” next to the winding handle stands for Mackenzie/Norris and the number 1 indicates this was the first joint project.

Stage 1

Left hand wind

Stage 2

A very nice Hardy case

Stage 3

The reel needed a fresh coat of lacquer after it’s extensive testing on the river Lochy in Scotland

Stage 4

A nice finish and the photo shows the stepped foot I like to make

Stage 5

Gold plated line guide

Stage 6

The tension adjuster is a nice diameter and easy to hold and adjust

Stage 7

The spring and pawl holder made from bronze and was one of the first test pieces I made

Reel Birth Certificate

A birth certificate I think is a nice touch to go with the reel. It can be used to record the ownership of the reel by other people in the future. Birth Date – 26th of May 2013

The concept of having a finger touch brake seemed to be a nice solution to controlling the tension of the line if a large fish were to take a fly and run. I believe this is a better solution to palming the spool which could cause the hand to be burnt. It also allows both hands to be used on the rod for better control.
