A very early and rare White Metal Hardy Saint George reel in need of some TLC
Stage 1
Reverse view of the reel showing blow holes from the foundry castings
Stage 2
Frame and thread inspection
Stage 3
I tested the metal using Hardy acid formula and there was almost no reaction. If this reel had been made from the usual alloy Hardy used it should have turned black
Stage 4
Further evidence the reel had never been black leaded
Stage 5
Part build after straightening the spindle to ensure the spool would spin correctly in the frame
Stage 6
The reel needed a replacement foot so I used an original Hardy bronze casting and set about making it smooth, to the correct length and width
Stage 7
Machining the foot to the correct width
Stage 8
Foot fitted using the correct screws
Stage 9
A complete clean, inspection and lubrication
Stage 10
The reel also needed the second central locking nut
